The reason is that paints contain Volatile Organic Compounds VOC, which can lead to long-term health issues.

Exposure to paint fumes can lead to eye, throat, or nose, irritation, which can be soothed by the flow of fresh air.

Paint fumes VOCs inhalation from can cause side effects such as, throat eye, nose irritation, nausea, trouble breathing, and headache  

Prolonged extensions to VOCs can lead to nervous system, kidneys, and liver damage.

As such it is important to have the paint work area well ventilated at all times.
