Water is pumped from a lower reservoir to a higher reservoir by a pump that provides 20 kW of shaft power. The free surface of t

he upper reservoir is 45 m higher than that of the lower reservoir. If the flow rate of water is measured to be 0.03 m3/s, determine mechanical power that is converted to thermal energy during this process due to frictional effects.

Answer:

6.5 kW

Explanation:

Input power = 20 kW = 20000 W

h = 45 m

Volume flow per second = 0.03 m^3 /s

mass flow per second = volume flow per second x density of water

                                    = 0.03 x 1000 = 30 kg/s

Output power = m g h / t = 30 x 10 x 45 = 13500 W

Power converted in form of heat = Input power - Output power

                                                       = 20000 - 13500 = 6500 W = 6.5 kW

Thus, mechanical power converted into heat is 6.5 kW.

sammy [17]

Answer: you are the person in charge of building a nuclear power plant in Florida. your first choice is to select a site for building the power plant.

Explanation: To find the answer, we need to know more about the nuclear power plants and the criteria to select the site for power plant.

<h3>What you mean by nuclear power plants?</h3>
  • Nuclear power can be defined from the nuclear fission reaction.
  • These power plants will heat the water to produce steam and this steam is used to spin large turbines and thus generates electricity.
<h3>How to select the site for nuclear power plant?</h3>
  • We have to consider the following things,
  • keep distance from populated area.
  • distance from load center.
  • Accessibility to site.
  • Water availability and fuel availability.
  • waste disposal.

Thus, we can conclude that, before building a nuclear power plant, our first choice should be to select a site.

A test charge of +4 µC is placed halfway between a charge of +6 µC and another of +2 µC separated by 20 cm. (a) What is the magn
S_A_V [24]

Answer:

(a) Magnitude: 14.4 N

(b) Away from the +6 µC charge

Explanation:

As the test charge has the same sign, the force that the other charges exert on it will be a repulsive force. The magnitude of each of the forces will be:

F_e = K\frac{qq_{test}}{r^2}

K is the Coulomb constant equal to 9*10^9 N*m^2/C^2, q and qtest is the charge of the particles, and r is the distance between the particles.

Let's say that a force that goes toward the +6 µC charge is positive, then:

F_e_1 = K\frac{q_1q_{test}}{r^2}=-9*10^9 \frac{Nm^2}{C^2} \frac{6*10^{-6}C*4*10^{-6}C}{(0.1m)^2} =-21.6 N

F_e_2 = K\frac{q_2q_{test}}{r^2}=9*10^9 \frac{Nm^2}{C^2} \frac{2*10^{-6}C*4*10^{-6}C}{(0.1m)^2} =7.2 N

The magnitude will be:

F_e = -21.6 + 7.2 = -14.4 N, away from the +6 µC charge
