Thoreau just want people to know that evil exist and there we might not be able to eliminate them completely. By knowing this, we can always prepare ourselves to take care of evils when we need but not completely lose our mind over it. Simply by choosing not to participate is often enough because the more people do it, the less evil would exist in this world.

who develop the disorder have an increase in fight-or-flight response,
disturbing and unpleasant thoughts, dreams and mental or physical distress to
certain cues that are in some way related to the trauma they experienced among other
symptoms.
In an experiment, an independent variable is the one that is controlled in order to measure the effects of the dependent variable. The dependent variable is the one that is being tested or measured.
