In 1911, Rutherford discovered that atoms have a small charged nucleus which is surrounded by largely empty space, and are circled by tiny electrons. It was  known as the Rutherford model or planetary model of the atom. Similarly in 1897, Thomson proved that the cathode rays produced from the cathode were actually a stream of negatively charged particles called electrons. So both of them gave the concept of electrons that they are negatively charged particles.
