Hey (; I'm taking this rigorous AP Stat course and I've mastered Binomial Sampling but this Geometric Sampling just has me stump

ed. I actually have a good general idea about how to do each question, but I haven't been able to turn up with the correct answers quite yet. I'd like to compare answers, if you could solve so then I could figure out the process of how to complete the problem, thanks. I'll give best answer btw.
For the scenarios below, determine if the experiment describes a geometric distribution. If it is not a geometric setting, state why. If it is a geometric setting, describe:

1. Roll two six-sided dice and examine their sum. Roll the dice until you roll a sum of 11.

a) the two outcomes
b) what constitutes one trial
c) the probability of success

2. Record the number of made shots a basketball player makes out of 10 attempts.

a) the two outcomes
b) what constitutes one trial
c) the probability of success
3.) There are 5 green marbles and 20 blue marbles in a jar. You reach in and take out a marble. You keep removing marbles until you observe a green marble.

a) the two outcomes
b) what constitutes one trial
c) the probability of success

4.) Draw a card from a standard deck of cards, observe the card, and replace it. Count the number of times you do this until you observe a king

a) the two outcomes
b) what constitutes one trial
c) the probability of success

Answer:

1) It is geometric

a) In each trial you can obtain 11 or obtain something else (and fail)

b) Throw 2 dices and watch if the result is 11 or not

c) The probability of success is 1/18

2) It is not geometric, but binomal.

Step-by-step explanation:

1) This is effectively geometric. When you see the sum of 2 dices, you can separate the result in two different outcomes: when the sum is 11 and when the sum is different from 11.

A trial is constituted bu throwing 2 dices and watching if the sum of the dices is 11 or not.

In order to get 11 you need one 5 in one dice and 1 six in another. As a consecuence, you have 2 favourable outcomes (a 5 in the first dice and a 6 in the second one or the other way around). The total amount of outcomes is 6² = 36, and all of them have equal probability. This means that the probability of success is 2/36 = 1/18.

2) This is not geometric distribution. The geometric distribution meassures how many tries do you need for one success. The amount of success in 10 trias follows a binomial distribution.

The phone company Ringular has a monthly cellular plan where a customer pays a flat monthly fee and then a certain amount of mon
ivanzaharov [21]

Answer:

The slope is $0.35/min and it gives the cost per minute of the phone used.

Step-by-step explanation:

We can model this situation with a linear equation of the form

y =mx+b

where y is monthly cost, x is the number of minutes, b is the flat monthly fee, and m is the slope of the equation, or in our case, the amount of money charged per minute.

The slope m is

m= \dfrac{\$372.5-\$131}{990min-300min}

m = \$0.35/min,

in other words, the phone company charges $0.5 per minute.

With the slope in hand, the linear equation becomes

y =0.35x+b,

and we can find the monthly fee b from that fact that for 300 minutes the cost is $131:

\$131 = 0.35(300min) +b

b = \%26.

Therefore,

y = 0.35x+26

where the slope if the equation give the cost per minute of the phone used.

Do the points A(1,3) B(4,2) C(-2,4) lie on the same line? Explain your answer. Show all work.
Jet001 [13]

We can see that

Slope\ of\ AB=Slope\ of\ BC=Slope\ of\ AC

The given points are on same line.

Further explanation:

There are two methods to find if the given points are on same line

  • The slope method: If the points are on same line the slopes of two pairs of points will be same
  • Area of triangle method

Given points are:

A(1,3) B(4,2) C(-2,4)

We will find the slope of AB, BC, and AC

So,

m=\frac{y_2-y_1}{x_2-x_1}

Slope\ of\ AB=\frac{2-3}{4-1} \\=-\frac{1}{3}

Slope\ of\ BC=\frac{4-2}{-2-4}\\ =\frac{2}{-6}\\=-\frac{1}{3}

Slope\ of\ AC= \frac{4-3}{-2-1} \\=-\frac{1}{3}

We can see that

Slope\ of\ AB=Slope\ of\ BC=Slope\ of\ AC

The given points are on same line.

Maria bought g gallons of gasoline for $3.95 per gallon and c cans of oil for $4.45 per can. a. What expression can be used to
Furkat [3]

Answer:

a.) Total amount spent on gasoline and oil = $ ( 3.95g + 4.45c )

b.) Total amount spent by Maria = $ 74.02

Step-by-step explanation:

As given,

Cost of gasoline = $ 3.95 gallon

Cost of oil per can = $ 4.45

Also given,

Maria bought g gallons of gasoline and c cans of oil

⇒ Total cost of g gallons of gasoline = g×3.95 = $3.95g

   Total cost of c cans of oil  = c×4.45 = $4.45c

Now,

a.)

Total amount spent on gasoline and oil = $ ( 3.95g + 4.45c )

b.)

As given ,

Maria buy gasoline , g = 8.6 gallons

Maria buy cans of oil , c = 6

So,

Total amount spent = $ 3.95(8.6) + 4.45(9)

                                = $ 33.97 + 40.05 = $ 74.02

⇒Total amount spent by Maria = $ 74.02
