The Boston marathon is a very competitive race. To qualify for the Boston marathon, male runners must have completed a marathon

in less than 3 hours and 5 minutes within the last year. Other marathons, such as the Chicago marathon, have no qualifying times. Anyone is able to run this race, even without completing a different marathon earlier in the year. Consider the groups of runners of each race: Boston marathon runners and Chicago marathon runners. Which group's finishing times for the marathon would most likely have the larger standard deviation?

Answer:

Chicago marathon runners

Step-by-step explanation:

Due to the strict qualifying time, the runners of the Boston marathon are going to very prepared, and quite close in their times. Since they are going to be close, the standard deviation is expected to be small.

Otherwise, in the Chicago marathon, anyone can run. This means that along with the professional runners, who are going to be very prepared, other unprepared runners will compete, and they are going to take a long time to complete the race, adding variation to the finishing times. The standard deviation is the square root of the variance, so since the variance for the Chicago marathon will be higher, the standard deviation also will

A rectangle has an area of 0.24 of a square. What are some possibility for the length and width of the rectangle? Tell why
VLD [36.1K]

Answer:

The possibilities of length and width of the rectangle are

x=1, y=0.24;

x=0.5, y=0.48;

x=0.25, y=0.96;

x=2, y=0.12

Step-by-step explanation:

Given that the area is 0.24 square meter

The area of a rectangle is given by

Area=length\times width square units

Let x be the length and y be the width.

Since the area is 0.24 square meter, we have the equation:

Area=x\times y = 0.24, with x and y measures in meters

If we want to know some possibilities of x and y, we can assume a value for one of them, and then calculate the other one using the equation.

Now choosing some values for "x", we have:

Put x = 1

1\times y = 0.24

∴ y = 0.24

Now put x = 0.5 we get

0.5\times y = 0.24

∴ y = 0.48

Put x = 0.25

0.25\times y = 0.24

∴ y = 0.96

Put x = 2

2\times y = 0.24

∴ y = 0.12
