The trust versus mistrust conflict is the first stage of Erikson's psychosocial development which occurs during infancy. At this stage, an infant learns to trust according to the attention and care given to them by their caregivers.

Since individuals at this stage need round the clock attention and nurturing, they learn to trust when their needs are provided. If proper care and attention are not given at this stage, the infant may grow mistrustful and unsatisfied.
