A physicist makes a cup of instant coffee and notices that, as the coffee cools, its level drops 3.00 mm in the glass cup. Show

that this decrease cannot be due to thermal contraction by calculating the decrease in level if the 350cm3 of coffee is in a 7.00-cm-diameter cup and decreases in temperature from 95.0°C to 45.0°C . (Most of the drop in level is actually due to escaping bubbles of air.)

Answer:

Decrease in level by thermal contraction  = 0.0076 mm

Drops in level = 3 mm

Therefore The decrease in level is not due to thermal contraction

Explanation:

From linear expansivity,

L₂ = L₁ +(1 + αΔT).............................. equation 1

Where L₂ = final length (m), L₁ = initial length, α = linear expansivity of liquid, ΔT = change in temperature.

Where L₁ = level of coffee in the glass cup = V/(πd²)/4..................... equation 2

     L₁ = 4V/πd², where V= Volume of coffee, d = diameter of the cup,

    L₁ = 350cm³, d = 7.00cm, and    π = 22/7 = 3.143

applying these values in equation 2 above,

     ∴  L ₁=( 4×350)/(3.143×7²)

       L₁ = 9.09

α = γ/3  Where γ = Volumetric expansion coefficient of liquid. = 0.00005/°C

α = 0.00005/3 = 0.0000167/°C, ΔT = L₂ - L₁ = 45 -95 = -50 °C.

Applying these values in equation 1 above,

L₂ = 9.09 [1+{0.0000167×(-50)}]

L₂ = 9.09 [1 - 0.000833]

L₂ = 9.09(0.999167)

L₂ = 9.082cm

∴ ΔL = Decrease in length = L₂ - L₁ = 9.082 - 9.09 = 0.3 cm

   ΔL = 0.0076

Decrease in level =0.076 mm

From the above, the decrease in level is not due to thermal contraction.

As Thermal contraction is less than Drops in level.

Antonina throws a coin straight up from a height of
vichka [17]

Answer:

s=vt-\frac{1}{2}gt^2

Explanation:

We could use the following suvat equation:

s=vt-\frac{1}{2}gt^2

where

s is the vertical displacement of the coin

v is its final velocity, when it hits the water

t is the time

g is the acceleration of gravity

Taking upward as positive direction, in this problem we have:

s = -1.2 m

g=-9.8 m/s^2

And the coin reaches the water when

t = 1.3 s

Substituting these data, we can find v:

v=\frac{s}{t}+\frac{1}{2}gt=-\frac{1.2}{1.3}+\frac{1}{2}(-9.8)(1.3)=-7.3 m/s

where the negative sign means the direction is downward.

An airplane propeller is 2.68 m in length (from tip to tip) and has a mass of 107 kg. When the airplane's engine is first starte
telo118 [61]

Answer:

a)30.14 rad/s2

b)43.5 rad/s

c)60633 J

d)42 kW

e)84 kW

Explanation:

If we treat the propeller is a slender rod, then its moments of inertia is

I =\frac{mL^2}{12} = \frac{107*2.68^2}{12} = 64.04 kgm^2

a. The angular acceleration is Torque divided by moments of inertia:

\alpha = \frac{T}{I} = \frac{1930}{64.04} = 30.14 rad/s^2

b. 5 revolution would be equals to 10\pi rad, or 31.4 rad. Since the engine just got started

\omega^2 = 2\alpha\theta = 2*30.14*31.4 = 1893.5

\omega = \sqrt{1893.5} = 43.5 rad/s

c. Work done during the first 5 revolution would be torque times angular displacement:

W = T*\theta = 1930 * 31.4 = 60633 J

d. The time it takes to spin the first 5 revolutions is

t = \frac{\omega}{\alpha} = \frac{43.5}{30.14} = 1.44 s

The average power output is work per unit time

P = \frac{W}{t} = \frac{60633}{1.44} = 41991 W or 42 kW

e.The instantaneous power at the instant of 5 rev would be Torque times angular speed at that time:

P_i = T*\omega = 1930*43.5=83983 W or 84 kW

Why does a glass rod become positively charged when it is rubbed with a silk cloth?
babunello [35]
The electrons are removed from the rod and transferred to the silk cloth. This leaves the rode positively charged and the cloth negatively charged.

Answer:

Mark me as brain list plz

Explanation:

Using Bernoulli's Theorem

1/2 V12 +P1/d = 1/2V22 +P2/d

V1 = 17.4

V2 =0

1 /2 V12 = Pressure Difference / d

Where d = Density of air

Pressure Difference =( 1/2 V12) Density of air

Pressure Difference = 369.36

Force = Pressure difference * area = 369.36 *3.5 = 1292.8 N
