If a chlorine atom were to attract an electron from sodium, the chlorine atom would become ______________ charged.
Kamila [148]

Since chlorine (Cl) is the molecule which attracts the electron therefore it would become negatively charged (Cl -), while the sodium (Na) on the other hand will become positively charged (Na +).

This process of one element stealing away the electron of another element happens when one is more electronegative than the other. The more electronegative element attracts the electron of the less electronegative element. This is actually what happens during an ionic bond between a metal and a non metal. The negatively charged ion is called the anion while the positively charged ion is called as the cation.

Answer:

negatively charged

The following list contains some common polyatomic ions. Using the charge on these ions and the idea of valence, predict the for
SSSSS [86.1K]

Answer: Na_2CO_3 or Sodium carbonate.

              KMnO_4 or Potassium permanganate

Sodium ion carries 1 + charge whereas carbonate ion carries overall charge of -2. So for every carbonate ion, two sodium ions combine to balance the charges and thus form a stable compound, Na_2CO_3

Potassium ion carries 1 + charge where as permanganate ion carries overall charge of -1. So for every permanganate ion, one potassium ion combines to balance the charges and thus form a stable compound, KMnO_4

The predicted formulas are shown in the attached image.
