Two charges q1 and q2 have a total charge of 12 C. When they are separated by 4 m, the force exerted by one charge on the other

has a magnitude of 8 mN. Find q1 and q2 if both are positive so that they repel each other, and q1 is the smaller of the two. (For the universal constant k use the value 8.99 109 N m2/C2.)

Answer:

q₂ = 11.9988 C ,  q₁ = 0.0012 C

Explanation:

For this exercise we will use Coulomb's law

     F = K q₁q₂ / r²

They indicate that the sum of the charges is

        q₁ + q₂ = 12

the force between them for r = 4 m is F = 8 10⁻³ N

       q₁q₂ = F r² / K

       q₁q₂ = 8 10⁻³ 4² / 8.99 10⁹

        q₁q₂ = 14.24 10⁻¹²

substitute we write our system of equations

       q₁ + q₂ = 12

        q₁q₂ = 14.24 10⁻¹²

This system has two equations and two unknowns so it can be solved, let's solve in the first equation and substitute in the second

       (12- q₂) q₂ = 14.24 10⁻¹²

         12q₂ - q₂² - 14.24 10⁻¹² = 0

         q₂² - 12 q₂ +14.24 10⁻¹² = 0

we solve the quadratic equation

         q₂ = [12 ±√ (12² - 4 14,24 10⁻¹²)] / 2

         q₂ = [12 ± 11,9999999] / 2

the two solutions are

      q2 = 11,9999999997  C

     q2 = 0.000000003

we substitute in the other equation to find the other charge

    q₁ + q₂ = 12

     q₁ = 12- q₂

     q₁ = 0.000000003 C

this value is very small, I think the value of the force is wrong, if the force is F = 8 10⁶ N

       q₁q₂ = 14.24 10⁻³

the quadratic equation is

       q₂² - 12 q₂ + 14.24 10⁻³ = 0

the solution is

       q₂ = [12 ±√ (12² - 4 14,24 10⁻³)] / 2

        q2 = [12 ±√ (143,940)] / 2

         q2 = [12 ± 11,9975] / 2

 the two results are

         q₂ = 11.9988  C

          q₂ = 0.0025  C

as in the problem it indicates that q1 is smaller the correct answer is

q₂ = 11.9988 C

     q₁ = 12-q₂

     q₁ = 0.0012 C

16. The energy absorbed in 10minutes by an electrical heater is 1.5 MJ. The supply voltage is 240 V. calculate: a) The current d
dsp73

Answer:

If by 1.5 MJ you mean 1.5E6 Joules then

W = P t    = power X time

W / t = P   power

P = 1.5E6 J / 600 sec = 2500 J / s

P = I V

a) I = 2500 J/s / (240 J/c) = 10.4 C / sec  = 10.4 amps

b) Q = I t = 10.4 C / sec * 300 sec = 3120 Coulombs

c)  E = P * t = 2500 J / sec * 100 hr * 3600 sec / hr = 9.0E8 Joules

A horse trots away from its trainer in a straight line, moving 38m away in 9.0s. It then turns abruptly and gallops halfway back
alekssr [168]

Answer:

a)The average speed of the horse is 5.3 m/s.

b)The average velocity of the horse is 1.8 m/s

Explanation:

Hi there!

a) The average speed (a.s) is calculated as the traveled distance (d) divided the time in which that distance was covered (t):

a.s = d/t

The distance covered by the horse is 38 m away from the trainer and then halfway (38/2 m) back:

d = 38 m + 38/2 m = 57 m

The time it took the horse to cover that distance was 9.0 s plus 1.8 s on the way back:

t = 9.0 s + 1.8 s = 10.8 s

Then the avereage speed will be:

a.s = 57 m / 10.8 s

a.s = 5.3 m/s

The average speed of the horse is 5.3 m/s.

b) The average velocity (a.v) is calculated as the displacement (Δx) divided the time (t) in which that displacement took place.

a.v = Δx/t

The displacement is calculated as the distance between the final position and the initial position:

Δx = final position - initial position

The horse moved 38 m away from the trainer (in the positive direction) and then returned 19 m (the horse moved 19 m in the negative direction). The final position of the horse is 19 m away from the trainer (the origin of the frame of reference). Then, the displacement will be:

Δx = final position - initial position

Δx = 19 m - 0 m  (notice that the horse started from the origin, i.e., the trainer).

Δx = 19 m

And the average velocity will be:

a.v = Δx/t

a.v = 19 m / 10.8 s

a.v = 1.8 m/s

The average velocity of the horse is 1.8 m/s
