What is the maximum number of possible solutions for the system shown below?

Mathematics
1 answer:
vekshin13 years ago
5 0

Answer:

B: 4 solutions

Step-by-step explanation:

Combining the two equations results in 2x² = 52, or x² = 26.

This equation has two solutions: x = ±√26.

As before, x² = 26. If we substitute 26 for x² in the 1st equation, we get:

26 - 4y² = 16, or 4y² = 10, or y = ±√5/2. Again: two solutions.

If we take x to be +√26, y could be ±√(5/2).

Check: is ( √26, √(5/2) ) a solution of the system?

Subbing these values into the first equation, we get:

26 - 4(5/2) = 16. Is this true?

Then 10 = 10. Yes.

Through three more checks, we find that this system has FOUR solutions.

Simultaneous equation refer to a pair of equations that are solved at the same time.

What is a simultaneous equation?

A simultaneous equation refer to a pair of equations that are solved at the same time.

For problem 1;

x = 4 - y ------ (1)

y^2 = 3x + 19 ----- (2)

Substitute (1) into (2)

y^2 = 3(4 - y) + 19

y^2 = 12 - 3y + 19

y^2 +3y - 31 =0

y = 4.27 or -7.27

x = 4 - 4.27 = 0.27

or

x = 4 - (-7.27) = 11.27

For the second problem;

x = 7 - y

y^2 = 5x - 15

Substitute (1) into (2)

y^2 = 5(7 - y) - 15

y^2 =35 -5y -15

y^2 + 5y - 20 = 0

y =2.62 or -7.62

x = 7 - 2.62 = 4.38

OR

x= 7 - (-7.62) = 14.62

Nate ordered several t-shirts for $7.90 each and paid $2 for shipping. If Nate spent a total of $160, how many t-shirts did he o
KatRina [158]

Answer:

20 Tshirts

Step-by-step explanation:

Tshirts = $7.90 each

Shipping = $2

Total amount = $160

Amount of tshirts bought = y

7.90y + 2 = 160

7.90y = 160 -2

7.90y = 158

Divide both sides by 7.9

y = 158÷7.9

y = 20
