Answer:

The initial kinetic energy of the bullet is closest to 491.87 J

Explanation:

Given;

mass of bullet, m₁ = 18g = 0.018kg

mass of block, m₂ = 10kg

height moved by the block, h = 9 mm = 0.009 m

time taken for the bullet to travel through the block, t = 0.001s

let the initial velocity of the bullet = v₁

let the final velocity of the bullet = v₂

Apply the principle of conservation of linear momentum;

initial momentum = final momentum

0.018v₁ = v₂(0.018 + 10)

0.018v₁ = 10.018v₂ -----equation (1)

Apply the law of conservation of energy when the bullet lifts the block through 9mm

mgh = ¹/₂mv₂²

gh = ¹/₂v₂²

v₂² = 2gh

v₂ = √2gh

v₂ = √(2 x 9.8 x 0.009)

v₂ = 0.42 m/s

Substitute in v₂ in equation 1, to determine the initial velocity of the bullet;

0.018v₁ = 10.018v₂

0.018v₁  =  10.018(0.42)

0.018v₁  = 4.208

v₁ = 4.208 / 0.018

v₁ = 233.78 m/s

Now, determine the initial kinetic energy of the bullet;

K.E₁ = ¹/₂m₁v₁²

K.E₁ = ¹/₂(0.018)(233.78)²

K.E₁ = 491.87 J

Therefore, the initial kinetic energy of the bullet is closest to 491.87 J

Suppose electric power is supplied from two independent sources which work with probabilities 0.4, 0.5, respectively. if both so
sattari [20]

Answer:

The answers to the questions are as follows

a)  k = 0, P = 0.3

k = 1, P = 0.5

k = 0, P = 0.2

b) The probability that enough power will be available is 0.5.

Explanation:

To solve the question we write the parameters as follows

Probability that the first power source works = P(A) = 0.4

Probability that the second power source works = P(B) = 0.5

When both sources are supplying power  we have the probability = 1

If non of them is producing the probability = 0

a) The probability that exactly k sources work for k=0,1,2 is given by

For k = 0, probability = (1- P(A))× (1- P(B)) = 0.6 × 0.5 =0.3

Therefore the probabilities that exactly 0 source work  = 0.3

for k = 1 we have the probability = P(A)(1-P(B)) + P(B)(1-P(A)

= 0.4(1-0.5)+0.5(1-0.4) = 0.2 + 0.3 = 0.5

The probabilities that exactly 1 source work  = 0.5

for k = 2 we have the probability given by = P(A) × P(B) = 0.4 × 0.5 = 0.2

Therefore the  probability that exactly 2 sources work  = 0.2

b)  The probability that enough power will be available is

0 × P(k = 0) + 0.6 × P(k = 1) + 1 × P(k = 2)

0 × 0.2 + 0.6 × 0.5 + 1 × 0.2 = 0.5

The probability that enough power will be available is 0.5.

Why do astronauts need to wear pressurized suits in space?
SashulF [63]
The correct answer is C , because the space is vacuum and his body can explode and for this reason,  the astronaut need a special costum to be protected. It's the same on the moon, because there is no atmosphere

Which part of a river would have animals with very muscular bodies and adaptations that let survive in turbulent water? Source z
lidiya [134]
The part of a river that would have animals with muscular bodies and adaptations that let survive in turbulent water is in the transition zone, the mid-transition zone to be precise. Water at the source zone possesses a lot of potential energy and as it flows from the upper reaches the potential energy is turned into kinetic energy when the course of the river begins to gradually level out and this translates into increase in velocity. By the time river water reaches the middle of the transition zone, most of the potential energy would have been turned into kinetic energy and thus water velocity would be quite high here. Animals living here would develop muscles because of constantly fighting against the strong current to avoid being swept downstream.
