Magnesium would acquire a stable arrangement of electrons by bonding with one atom of which of the following elements?

Chemistry

Here we have to choose the anion from the given atom, which will combine with Mg in a stable arrangement as a monovalent anion.

Mg²⁺ will only combine with one single anion O²⁻ to form MgO.

The electronic configuration of Magnesium (Mg¹²) is 1s²2s²2p⁶3s², so the most stable ionic form of Mg is Mg²⁺ having inert gas electronic configuration i.e. 10 (Neon).

Now for a single anion the charge of the ion should be -2. Among the given atoms the electronic configuration of oxygen (O⁸) is 1s²2s²2p⁴, so the divalent anion of oxygen posses 10 electrons, inert gas electronic configuration (Ne).

The electronic configuration of chlorine (Cl¹⁷) is 1s²2s²2p⁶3s²3p⁵. Thus the monovalent anion will have 18 electrons i.e. inert gas electronic configuration, Argon (Ar).

The helium has only 2 electrons and it cannot leave the electrons as it will be highly unstable in that condition.

The nitrogen (N⁷) 1s²2s²2p³, thus the divalent anion will poss 9 electrons which is not stable.

Thus Mg²⁺ will only combine with one single anion O²⁻ to form MgO, which will be highly stable.

Critical Thinking: How are Volcanoes connected to the formation of the atmosphere and oceans????
garri49 [273]
Not sure how they're connected to atmosphere other than polluting it with hot ash, but im fairly certain it creates land masses which separate oceans and form land underwater with certain underwater volcanoes

If you add a large piece of zinc to a beaker of acid and, in a separate beaker, zinc shavings to a beaker of acid (of equal conc
Sergeu [11.5K]

Answer: surface area

Explanation:

Surface area affects rate of reaction. The smaller the surface area the faster the rate of reaction. The zinc shavings have a smaller surface area of reactants compared to the large piece of zinc. The smaller surfaces area of reactants ensures that it comes into close proximity with the acid solution for reaction to take place.

Burning 1 kg of coal releases about 3 million joules of energy. If you could use all of the chemical energy to lift another kilo
Katarina [22]

I could lift 3.06 x 10⁵ m high

Further explanation

Energy is the ability to do work. Energy can change from one energy to another

Potential energy is the energy that an object has because of its position

The potential energy can be formulated:

Ep = m. g. h

E = potential energy of an object, joule

m = object mass, kg

g = gravity acceleration, m / s²

h = height of an object, m

energy of coal = 3.10⁶ J

mass = 1 kg

g = 9.8 m/s²

\tt h=\dfrac{E}{m.g}\\\\h=\dfrac{3.10^6}{1\times 9.8}=3.06\times 10^5`m
