Explain the difference between the law of superposition and radioactive dating

Physics
1 answer:
WARRIOR [948]3 years ago

The law of superposition in sedimentary and extrusive igneous rocks states that an upper bed of rock is younger than a lower one, provided that earth-movements have not reversed the order. Radioactive dating is the use of radioactive elements to determine the age of different items. The premise of radioactive decay is dependent on the fact that unstable elements break down at a fixed rate into other elements. Hence the age of rocks containing radioactive elements can be determined.

Which is a valid inertial frame of reference?
kow [346]

The correct answer to the question will be C. a hot air balloon moving at 30° east of north with no net force

EXPLANATION:

Before coming into any conclusion, first we have to understand an inertial frame of reference.

An inertial frame of reference is a frame of reference which is an unaccelerated frame. In this frame of reference, Newton's laws are valid.

A falling rock can not be considered as an inertial frame as it is accelerating. When a body falls, the forces that act on the body are gravity and air resistance. The gravity acts in vertical downward direction while air resistance acts in vertical upward direction. There is a net force in the downward direction which means it is experiencing an acceleration.

The frictionless spinning merry-go-round can not be considered as an inertial frame of reference. It is so because a rotating frame can not be considered as an inertial frame. It is non inertial in nature.

A hot air balloon moving 30 degree east of north with no net force can be considered as an inertial frame as it is not accelerating.

A space shuttle whose boosters just ignited for take off can not be also inertial frame as it is an accelerated frame.

When do both hemispheres receive the same amount of the sun's energy?
Rasek [7]

Answer:

Both hemispheres receive the same amount of sunlight during both autumnal equinox and vernal equinox

Explanation:

The vernal or spring equinox happens around March 20 or thereabouts yearly. Equinoxes and various seasons happen as the Earth orbits the Sun and the Earth's orbit. Thus, we have Autumn equinox and spring or vernal equinox. During the Northern hemisphere spring and summer, the northern hemisphere is tilted towards the sun while during the Autumn and winter the northern hemisphere is tilted away from the sun.

During the autumn and spring equinoxes, the earth is neither tilted away or towards the sun. This means that both northern and southern hemisphere receive equal sunlight during these periods: that is hours of daylight and night are roughly about the same.
