The world's population was 5.51 billion on January 1, 1993 and 5.88 billion on January 1, 1998. Assume that at any time the popu

lation grows at a rate proportional to the population at that time. In what year should the world's population reach 7 billion? (Give a calendar year. For example: 2001)

Answer:

In 2011 the world's population will be 7 billions

Step-by-step explanation:

Lets choose January 1, 1993 as 0 time, so January 1, 1998 is time 5, because is 5 year after.

As the population grows at a ate proportional to the population at that time, we can determinate the linear relationship between the time and the world's population.

We have two point:

January 1, 1993 (x1=0) ⇒ world's population was 5.51 billion (y1= 5.51)

January 1, 1998 (x2=5) ⇒ world's population was 5.88 billion (y2= 5.88)

The linear relationship between this two variables can be represent by the equation:

y=a*x+b (linear function)

a ⇒ slope

b ⇒ intercept with y-axes

a=\frac{y2-y1}{x2-x1}=\frac{5.88-5.51}{5-0}=\frac{0.37}{5}=0.074

b=y-a*x

Using (x1,y1)

b=5.51-0.074*0=5.51

y=0.074*x+5.51

Now we can estimate how many years from 1991 the population will be 7 billion

y3=7

x3= ?

(y3-5.51)/0.074= x3

(7-5.51)/0.074=x3

20.135=x3

The result is not an exact value, but this decimal value will represent a few extra days after January 1, 2011 (20 years after January 1, 1991), but as the question as for a calendar year and not and exact day we will just work with the 20 years

We can say that in 2011 the world's population will be 7 billions

1) Anna and Jason have summer jobs stuffing envelopes for two different companies. Anna earns $20 for every 400 envelopes she fi
AleksAgata [21]

Answer:

The answer is below

Step-by-step explanation:

A) i)

For Anna initially, she has $0 from making 0 envelopes. After making 400 envelopes she has $20. Let x represent the number of envelopes and y the earnings. Hence this can be represented by the points (0, 0) and (400, 20). Using the equation of a line:

y-y_1=\frac{y_2-y_1}{x_2-x_1} (x-x_1)\\\\y-0=\frac{20-0}{400-0}(x-0)\\\\y=\frac{1}{20} x

The table is:

x:   200     400       600     800     1000

y:    10        20          30        40       50

ii)

For Jason initially, he has $0 from making 0 envelopes. For every 250 envelopes he has $10. Let x represent the number of envelopes and y the earnings. Hence this can be represented by the points (0, 0) and (250, 10). Using the equation of a line:

y-y_1=\frac{y_2-y_1}{x_2-x_1} (x-x_1)\\\\y-0=\frac{10-0}{250-0}(x-0)\\\\y=\frac{1}{25} x

The table is:

x:   200     400       600     800     1000

y:    8         16           24        32       40

The graph is plotted using geogebra online graphing

b) From the table above we can see that Anna makes more stuffing than Jason.

c) Anna has a savings of $100. Hence this can be represented by the points (0, 100) and (250, 10). Using the equation of a line:

y-y_1=\frac{y_2-y_1}{x_2-x_1} (x-x_1)\\\\y-100=\frac{20-0}{400-100}(x-0)\\\\y=\frac{1}{15} x+100

We can see from the graph that there is a y intercept at 100. That is the earnings starts from 100.

The equation of a line is given as y = mx + b, where m is the slope and b is the y intercept (initial value)

For the first graph, the slope is 1/20 and the initial value is 0 while for the second graph the slope is 1/15 and the initial value is 100

D) The line pass through (10, 10) and (100, 40), hence:

y-y_1=\frac{y_2-y_1}{x_2-x_1} (x-x_1)\\\\y-10=\frac{40-10}{100-10}(x-10)\\\\y-10=\frac{1}{3} (x-10)\\\\y=\frac{1}{3}x+\frac{20}{3}

Steve and Ben have some money in their wallets. If Steve gives Ben $3, Ben will have twice as much as Steve. If Ben gives Steve
Zigmanuir [339]

Answer:

Money owned by Steve = $11

Money owned by Ben = $13

Step-by-step explanation:

Let x denotes the money owned by Steve and y denotes the money owned by Ben.

Then, Steve gives $3 to Ben

Money left with Steve = x-3 and Ben = y+3

Now, Ben will have twice as much as Steve.

⇒ y+3  = 2(x-3) .............(1)

If Ben gives Steve $7

Money left with Steve = x+7 and Ben = y-7

Then,  the amount Ben has will be one-third that of Steve’s.

⇒ y-7 = \frac{1}{3} (x+7) ..........(2)

Solving equation (1) and (2) by elimination method, we get

x = 11 and y = 13

⇒ Money owned by Steve = $11

Money owned by Ben = $13
