The early alchemists used to do an experiment in which water was boiled for several days in a sealed glass container. Eventually

, some solid residue would appear in the bottom of the flask, which was interpreted to mean that some of the water in the flask had been converted into "earth." When Lavoisier repeated this experiment, he found that the water weighed the same before and after heating, and the mass of the flask plus the solid residue equaled the original mass of the flask. Were the alchemists correct?

Answer:

No

Explanation:

Hello,

Since the sealed glass container is isolated (closed system) no escape of boiled water (steam) was presented, so it is obvious that the alchemists were wrong, it is impossible that the water turns into "earth" because it has components that water does not have by itself (metallic and nonmetallic ions and molecular compounds) that is why the solid residue could have come from suspended solids or simply solids that were initially dissolved and due to the boiling of water, they remained at the bottom of the flask. Nevertheless, the experiment done by Lavoisier was more precise because the conclusion based on the initial and final masses, accounts for the boiling process; besides, the mass agreement substantiates that no mass was removed due to the isolation of the flask.

Best regards.

A sample of neon occupies a volume of 461 mL at 1 atm and 273 K. What will be the volume of the neon when the pressure is reduce
Softa [21]

Answer:

0.501 L

Explanation:

To solve this problem we will use Boyle,s Law. According to this law "The volume of given amount of gas is inversely proportional to applied pressure at constant temperature".

                           V∝ 1/P

                           V= K/P

                            VP=K

Here the K is proportionality constant.

so,

             P1V1 = P2V2

P= pressure

V= volume

Given data:

P1= 1 atm

V1= 461 mL

P2= 0.92 atm

V2= ? (L)

To solve this problem we have to convert the mL into L first.

1 L = 1000 mL

461/1000= 0.461 L

Now we will put the values in the equation,

P1V1 = P2V2

V2= P1V1/ P2

V2= 1 atm × 0.461 L / 0.92 atm

V2= 0.501 L

What is added to a concentrated solution of sodium thiosulfate to dilute it?
steposvetlana [31]

Answer:

Water is added to a concentrated solution of sodium thiosulfate to dilute it.

Explanation: Water is a universal solvent. It has the capability to dissolve many substances in it. When water is added to a solution, the concentrated solution can be diluted. Dilute solution means the presence of water in high amount and solute quantity is very low.
