Make an equation out of the statement "51 is 6% of what number". Remember: -- 6% means 0.06 -- "is" means the same as "equals" -- in math, "of" almost always means "times" Give the answer a label, and you'll be ready to begin. Let's call it ' M ' for "mystery number". 51 is 6% of (the answer) 51 = 0.06 x M Can you solve that equation and find out what ' M ' is ? What if you divide each side by 0.06 ? Then it says 51 / 0.06 = M Pick up your pencil or your calculator, and divide 51 by 0.06 . You get 850 . Now your equation says 850 = M Isn't that exactly what you want ? It says 'Mystery number' is 850 . Try it on your calculator. Take 6% of 850 . You'll get 51, just like the problem says.
Okay, so let's start by setting up this problem: (original number=x)(percentage=.06)=(percentage of original number) So it should look like this: (x)(.06)=51 Now we should divide .06 from each side x=850 And there we go! 850 is the answer. i hope this help
