A sample of solid NH4Cl was placed in a sealed jar and was heated to 465 °C until the system reached equilibrium. The pressure o

f HCl and NH3 were 1.03 and 1.18 atm, respectively. Determine the value of ΔG° for the reaction at 465 °C.

Answer:

- 1.22KJ

Explanation:

First we put down the equation of the reaction;

NH4Cl(s)<-------->NH3(g) + HCl(g)

The equilibrium constant K is obtained from;

K= P(NH3) × P(HCl)

Where;

P(NH3)= pressure of ammonia

P(HCl)= pressure of hydrogen chloride gas

Pure solids and liquids are not included in the equilibrium constant expression. This is because they do not affect the reactant amount at equilibrium in the reaction, so they are disregarded and kept at 1. Remember that the activity, a, of any solid or liquid in a reaction is equal to 1. Hence [NH4Cl]= 1

K= 1.03 × 1.18 = 1.22

∆G° = -RTlnK

R= 8.314 JK-1mol-1

T= 465°C +273= 738K

K= 1.22

lnK= ln(1.22)= 0.19885

∆G= -(8.314 ×738 ×0.19885)

∆G= -1220.1 J

∆G= -1.22×10^3 J

∆G= - 1.22KJ

The chemical equation is unbalanced and synthesized.

What is a chemical equation?

A chemical equation is described as the symbolic representation of a chemical reaction in the form of symbols and chemical formulas.

In a chemical equation, the reactant entities are given on the left-hand side and the product entities is shown on the right-hand side with a plus sign between the entities in both the reactants and the products, and an arrow that indicates towards the products to show the direction of the reaction.

We can conclude that in the chemical equation shown is unbalanced because both amounts of the individual elements and compounds do not reflect on the reactant and product side.

The complete question is below:

After learning about the law of conservation of mass, Sammy became interested in balancing equations. He knew that the symbol for aluminum was Al and silver tarnish was Ag2S. He also knew that mixing the two chemicals yielded pure silver, or Ag, in an aluminum sulfide solution. Here is the equation showing this reaction:

3 Ag2S + 2 Al → 6 Ag + Al2S3

This equation is (synthesis / unbalanced / replacement / balanced), and it represents a(n) (unbalanced / balanced / synthesized / replaced) chemical reaction.

answer choices:

 • synthesis; balanced

 • balanced; replacement

 • unbalanced; synthesized

 • balanced; balanced

What substance is oxidized in the following reaction? 4HCl + MnO2 → Cl2 + 2H2O + MnCl2
Blizzard [7]

Answer:

Cl⁻ was oxidized.

Explanation:

 • 4HCl + MnO₂ → Cl₂ + 2H₂O + MnCl₂

Oxidation can be defined as the process in which the oxidation number of a substance increases.

On the left side of the equation, Cl has a charge of -1 (in HCl); while on the right side of the equation Cl has a charge of 0 in Cl₂.

Thus, Cl⁻ was oxidized.

3.0 L of oxygen gas is heated from 100k to 250k. What is the new volume after the temperature has been increased???
alexandr402 [8]

Answer:

7.5 L

Explanation:

Using Charles' law, which is V1/T1=V2/T2, we can plug in these numbers to find the answer. The law states that volume is directly proportional to temperature. 3.0L/100K = x L / 250 K. Solve for x to get 7.5 L. Hope this helps.
