A gene mutation can occur because of environmental factors. If a person is exposed to UV lights it can cause a mutation to happen
Most times the average citizen knows what they've been taught on chronic illnesses from tv shows, teachers, co workers maybe, etc. Theres no telling what each and every citizen knows on it.
