The Liberian Exodus Joint Stock Steamship Company was organized by black men to help facilitate the return of black people from America to Africa. This event also came to be known as the Liberian exodus of 1878.
The Company was formed in 1877 with a capital of $6,000 with which a ship named "the Azor" was purchased to carry black people from South Carolina to Liberia. In April 1878, the ship began its journey carrying 206 emigrants. But due to financial difficulties, the ship could not make other voyages.
