The major function of iron in the body is the formation of compounds essential to the transportation and utilization of oxygen to further this purpose  the vast majority of iron in the body is used to form hemoglobin.

Iron is involved in energy production and through its role in the electron transport chain (ETC) . Heme contained molecules which are called cytochromes are involved in electron transport for ATP production by reducing iron in the heme from its ferric form to its ferrous from and vice versa.

It is helpful in the production of hemoglobin a protein that allows red blood cells to carry oxygenated blood to every cells of the body.It makes hemoglobin , a protein in red blood cells which carries oxygen from the lungs to allover the body and myoglobin , protein that provides oxygen to muscles.
