Methane (CH4) is the main component of marsh gas. Heating methane in the presence of sulfur produces carbon disulfide and hydrog

en sulfide as the only products. (a) Write the balanced chemical equation for the reaction of methane and sulfur. (Use the lowest possible coefficients. Include states of matter under SATP conditions in your answer.)(b) Calculate the theoretical yield of carbon disulfide when g of methane is reacted with an equal mass of sulfur.

Answer:

71.25 g

Explanation:

Methane + Sulfur = Carbon Disulfide + Hydrogen Sulfide

The equation is given as;

CH4 + S --> CS2 + H2S

Upon balancing, we have;

CH4(g) + 4S(s) → CS2(l) + 2H2S(g)

Theoretical yield of carbon disulphide;

Equal masses of 120g

The limiting reactant is sulphur It determines how much of the product is formed.

From the equation;

4 mol of S produces 1 mol of CS2

upon converting to masses using; Mass = number of mol * Molar mass

4 mol of S = 4 * 32

1 mol of CS2 = 76g

128g of S produces 76g of C2, 120g would produce ?

128 = 76

120 = x

x = 120 * 76 / 128

x = 71.25g

When FeC13 is ignited in an atmosphere of pure oxygen, this reaction takes place. 4FeCl3(sJ 30lgJ ~ 2F~0 (sJ 6Cl2(gJ If 3.00 mol
oksano4ka [1.4K]

Answer : The reagent present in excess and remains unreacted is, O_2

Solution : Given,

Moles of FeCl_3 = 3.00 mole

Moles of O_2 = 2.00 mole

Excess reagent : It is defined as the reactants not completely used up in the reaction.

Limiting reagent : It is defined as the reactants completely used up in the reaction.

Now we have to calculate the limiting and excess reagent.

The balanced chemical reaction is,

2FeCl_3(s)+O_2(g)\rightarrow 2FeO(s)+3Cl_2(g)

From the balanced reaction we conclude that

As, 2 moles of FeCl_3 react with 1 mole of O_2

So, 3.00 moles of FeCl_3 react with \frac{3.00}{2}=1.5 moles of O_2

From this we conclude that, O_2 is an excess reagent because the given moles are greater than the required moles and FeCl_3 is a limiting reagent and it limits the formation of product.

Hence, the reagent present in excess and remains unreacted is, O_2

Which best describes a compound such as sodium chloride?
gayaneshka [121]

Answer:

check it below

Explanation:

NaCl; Sodium Chloride is an ionic compound formed by sodium and Chlorine.

Ionic bond is very strong, It can't be separated back to sodium and chlorine just by physical change. Chemicals which are more reactive can displace ions, thus seperate it
