In the following chemical reaction between H_2 and Cl_2 to produce HCl, what is the sum of the mass of HCl produced plus the mas
Nonamiya [84]

Answer:

Left over mass of hydrogen = 0.06 g

Mass of HCl produced = 12.41 g

Explanation:

Given data:

Mass of H₂ = 0.40 g

Mass of Cl₂ = 12.35 g

Mass of left over reactant = ?

Mass of HCl produced = ?

Solution:

Chemical equation:

H₂ + Cl₂    →     2HCl

Number of moles of H₂:

Number of moles = mass / molar mass

Number of moles = 0.40 g/ 2 g/mol

Number of moles = 0.2 mol

Number of moles of Cl₂:

Number of moles = mass / molar mass

Number of moles = 12.35 g/ 71 g/mol

Number of moles = 0.17 mol

Now we will compare the moles of HCl with H₂ and Cl₂.

                     H₂             :            HCl

                      1               :               2

                   0.2              :           2×0.2 = 0.4

                     Cl₂             :             HCl

                      1               :              2

                    0.17           :            2 × 0.17 = 0.34

Chlorine is limiting reactant.

Mass of HCl produced:

Mass = number of moles × molar mass

Mass = 0.34 mol × 36.5 g/mol

Mass = 12.41 g

Leftover mass of hydrogen:

                          Cl₂               :               H₂

                            1                :                 1

                           0.17            :             0.17

Number of moles of H₂ react with Cl₂  are 0.17.

Moles remain unreacted = 0.2 - 0.17 = 0.03 mol

Mass left over:

Mass = number of moles × molar mass

Mass = 0.03 mol × 2 g/mol

Mass = 0.06 g

In one process, 6.05 kg of caf2 is treated with an excess of h2so4 and yields 2.85 kg of hf. calculate the percent yield of hf.
Kobotan [32]
 The %  yield  of Hf  is  91. 8%

calculation

% yield =  actual mass/ theoretical mass  x100
actual mass = 2.85 Kg

calculate the theoretical  mass
by first  write the equation for reaction

CaF2  +H2SO4  → 2HF  + CaSO4
find  the  moles  of CaF2  used
moles = mass/molar mass
mass = 6.05Kg   = 6.05 x1000 =6050 Kg
molar mass  of CaF2  =  40 + (19 x2) = 78 g/mol

moles= 6050/ 78 = 77.6 moles

by  use  of mole ratio between  CaF2  to HF  which  is  1:2 the  moles of HF is therefore = 77.6 x2 =155.2  moles of Hf

find the  theoretical mass  of HF = moles x  molar mass ( 1 +19=20g/mol)

=   155.2  moles x 20 g/mol = 3104 grams  = 3104 /1000 = 3.104 Kg

The % yield  is therefore  = 2.85 Kg/ 3.104 Kg x100 =  91.8%

The compound magnesium phosphate has the chemical formula Mg3(PO4)2. In this compound, phosphorous and oxygen act together as on
Lapatulllka [165]

Answer:

The 2 in the formula means that, there are 2 phosphate anions that forms the salt.

Explanation:

Magnesium phosphate is a ionic salt.

The formula indicates that 3 moles of Mg and 2 moles of anion phosphate are contained in 1 mol of compound.

3Mg²⁺ + 2PO₄⁻³  →  Mg₃(PO₄)₂

The phosphate anion comes from phosphoric acid and it is generated when the acid loses the 3 protons.

H₃PO₄  →  3H⁺  + PO₄⁻³

Phosphate has a negative charge of -3, so when it bond to magnesium, which has a charge of +2, there must be 3 magnesium and 2 phosphate to make a global charge +6 -6 in the ions
