Erik and Nita are playing a game with numbers. In the game, they each think of a random number from zero to 20. If the differenc

e between their two numbers is less than 10, then Erik wins. If the difference between their two numbers is greater than 10, then Nita wins. Use what you know about inequalities and absolute values to better understand the game.

Let X is the random number Erik thinks of, and Y is the random number Nita thinks of.
Both X and Y are in the range from 0 to 20.
X<=20
Y<=20
If the difference between their two numbers is less than 10, then Erik wins.
The difference between the two numbers can be written X-Y, or Y-X depending on which number (X or Y) is greater. But we do not know that. In order not to get negative value, we calculate absolute value of X-Y, written |X-Y| which will give positive value whether X is greater than Y or not.
If |X-Y|<10 Erik wins.
If the difference between their two numbers is greater than 10, then Nita wins.
If |X-Y|>10 Nita Wins

A company makes two sizes of cylindrical shaped boxes. The ratio of the heights is 5:7.
Dmitrij [34]

Answer:

The volume ratio is also 5 : 7

Step-by-step explanation:

The volume of a cylinder is given by the following formula:

volume = pi*r²*h

Since we have two cylinders and their height varies at a ratio of 5:7 we can say that the smaller one has a height of "h" while the bigger has height of "(7/5)*h". Thefore their volume is:

volume smaller = pi*r²*h

volume bigger = pi*r²*(7/5)*h

volume bigger = (7/5)*pi*r²*h

The ratio of their volume is given by the division of the smaller volume by the bigger one:

volume ratio = volume smaller / volume bigger

volume ratio = (pi*r²*h) / [(7/5)*pi*r²*h] = 1/(7/5)

volume ratio = 5/7

The volume ratio is also 5 : 7.
