Methyl salicylate is a common active ingredient in liniments such as ben-gay. It is also known as oil of wintergreen. It is made

up of carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen atoms. When a sample of methyl salicylate weighing 5.287 g is burned in excess oxygen, 12.24 g of carbon dioxide and 2.505 g of water are formed. What is the simplist formula for oil of wintergreen

Answer: The empirical formula is C_3H_3O.

Explanation:

The chemical equation for the combustion of hydrocarbon having carbon, hydrogen and oxygen follows:

C_xH_yO_z+O_2\rightarrow CO_2+H_2O

where, 'x', 'y' and 'z' are the subscripts of Carbon, hydrogen and oxygen respectively.

We are given:

Mass of CO_2 = 12.24 g

Mass of H_2O = 2.505 g

Molar mass of carbon dioxide = 44 g/mol

Molar mass of water = 18 g/mol

For calculating the mass of carbon:

In 44g of carbon dioxide, 12 g of carbon is contained.

So, in 12.24 g of carbon dioxide, =\frac{12}{44}\times 12.24=3.338g of carbon will be contained.

For calculating the mass of hydrogen:

In 18g of water, 2 g of hydrogen is contained.

So, in 2.505 g of water, =\frac{2}{18}\times 2.505=0.278g of hydrogen will be contained.

Mass of oxygen in the compound = (5.287) - (3.338+0.278) = 1.671  g

Step 1 : convert given masses into moles.

Moles of C =\frac{\text{ given mass of C}}{\text{ molar mass of C}}= \frac{3.338g}{12g/mole}=0.278moles

Moles of H=\frac{\text{ given mass of H}}{\text{ molar mass of H}}= \frac{0.278g}{1g/mole}=0.278moles

Moles of O=\frac{\text{ given mass of O}}{\text{ molar mass of O}}= \frac{1.671g}{16g/mole}=0.104moles

Step 2 : For the mole ratio, divide each value of moles by the smallest number of moles calculated.

For C =\frac{0.278}{0.104}=3

For H =\frac{0.278}{0.104}=3

For O =\frac{0.104}{0.104}=1

The ratio of C : H : O = 3: 3: 1

Hence the empirical formula is C_3H_3O.

If and acid has a Ka dissociation constant of 1 x 10-9 what is the pKa of this acid?
Sphinxa [80]

Answer:

pKa = 9

Explanation:

In this case, we have to remember the meaning of "p". When we use "p" in any calculation we have to apply the minus ten based logarithm, so:

p~=~-Log

For example, when we use the "pH" value. We have to apply the minus ten based logarithm of the concentration of the hydronium ion:

pH~=~-Log[H^+]

So, if we have wanted to calculate the pKa value. We have to apply the minus ten based logarithm of the Ka value, so:

pKa~=~-Log~Ka

Now we can plug the value into the equation:

pKa~=~-Log~1x10^-^9

pKa~=~9

<u>The pKa value is 9.</u>

I hope it helps!

The idea that atoms are indivisible explains all of the following except which of the following
Crazy boy [7]

Answer:

ll matter is composed of extremely small particles called atoms.

Atoms of a given element are identical in size, mass, and other properties. Atoms of different elements differ in size, mass, and other properties.

Atoms cannot be subdivided, created, or destroyed.

Atoms of different elements can combine in simple whole number ratios to form chemical compounds.

In chemical reactions, atoms are combined, separated, or rearranged.

Each atom is uniform, homogeneous, colorless, tasteless, and indivisible.ll atoms of a given element are identical in mass and properties. Compounds are formed by a combination of two or more different kinds of atoms. A chemical reaction is a rearrangement of atom.

If 28 ml of 5.4 m h2so4 was spilled, what is the minimum mass of nahco3 that must be added to the spill to neutralize the acid?
Ainat [17]

A reaction between acid and base to form water and salt is known as neutralization reaction. It is a double replacement reaction.

The reaction between H_2SO_4 and NaHCO_3 will be:

H_2SO_4 + NaHCO_3 \rightarrow Na_2SO_4 + CO_2 + H_2O

The balanced reaction is:

H_2SO_4 + 2NaHCO_3 \rightarrow Na_2SO_4 + 2CO_2 + 2H_2O

Volume of H_2SO_4 = 28 mL (given)

Since, 1 L = 1000 mL

So, 28 mL = 0.028 L

Molarity of H_2SO_4 = 5.4 M (given)

Molarity = \frac{number of moles of solute}{Volume of solution in Liters}   -(1)

Substituting the values in equation (1):

5.4 mol/L = \frac{number of moles of H_2SO_4}{0.028 L}

number of moles of H_2SO_4 = 5.4 mol/L\times0.028 L

number of moles of H_2SO_4 = 0.1512 mol

From the balanced reaction between H_2SO_4 and NaHCO_3, 2 moles of NaHCO_3 reacts with 1 mole of H_2SO_4.

Molar mass of NaHCO_3 = 84.007 g/mol

Mass of NaHCO_3 needed:

0.1512 mol H_2SO_4 \times \frac{2 mole NaHCO_3}{1 mole H_2SO_4}\times \frac{84.007 g}{1 mole NaHCO_3} = 25.404 g

Hence, the required amount of NaHCO_3 is 25.404 g.

For a half-reaction in an acidic solution, which substances should you add to balance the equation?
Alla [95]
The answer is a. H+ and H2O. For a half-reaction in acidic solutions, elements that are not hydrogen and oxygen are balanced first. Then we add H2O to balance oxygen atoms and we add H+ to balance the hydrogen atoms. We do the same steps for basic solutions, but we also add hydroxide ions OH- in the latter part.
