In a police ballistics test, 2.00-g bullet traveling at 700 m/s suddenly hits and becomes embedded in a stationary 5.00-kg wood

block. Does the bullet gain or lose momentum?
Physics

Answer:

The bullet will lose momentum

Explanation:

mass of the bullet, m₁ = 2.0 g = 0.002 kg

initial velocity of the bullet, u₁ = 700 m/s

mass of the wood block, m₂ = 5 kg

initial velocity of the wood block, u₂ = 0

let the final velocity of the bullet-block system after collision = v

Apply the principle of conservation of linear momentum;

m₁u₁ + m₂u₂ = v(m₁ + m₂)

(0.002 x 700) + (5 x 0) = v(0.002 + 5)

1.4 = 5.002 v

v = 1.4 / 5.002

v = 0.28 m/s

Change in momentum of the bullet is given by;

ΔP = m₁v - m₁u₁

ΔP = m₁(v - u₁)

ΔP = 0.002( 0.28 - 700)

ΔP = -1.4 kg.m/s

Therefore, the bullet will lose momentum

Read each scenario and then answer the question scenario a 120 J of work is done in 6 seconds Scenario b 160 J of work is done i
Zielflug [23.3K]

Answer:

all scenarios are using the same power

Explanation:

we know that power is defined as P(Watts)=W(Joules)/t(seconds).

When applying this formula to each of the scenarios we find:

\frac{120J}{6s}=\frac{160J}{8s}=\frac{200J}{10s}= 20W

A 6.50-g sample of copper metal at 25.0°C is heated by the addition of 84.0 J of energy. The final temperature of the copper is
Mekhanik [1.2K]

Answer:

Final temperature of the copper is 59 degrees Celsius

Explanation:

It is given that,

Mass of the sample of copper metal, m = 6.5 g

Initial temperature of the metal, T_i=25^{\circ}\ C=298\ K

Heat generated, Q = 84 J

The specific heat capacity of liquid water is 0.38 J/g-K

Let T_f is the final temperature of the copper. It can be calculated using the definition of specific heat of any substance. It is given by :

Q=mc\Delta T

Q=mc(T_f-T_i)

T_f=\dfrac{Q}{mc}+T_i

T_f=\dfrac{84}{6.5\times 0.38}+298

T_f=332\ K

or

T_f=59^{\circ}C

So, the final temperature of the copper is 59 degrees Celsius. Hence, this is the required solution.
