A recent study revealed that the average weight of babies born in the United States is normally distributed with a mean of 7.5 p

ounds. This number is lower than recent years and so researchers are interested in determining what factors are associated with lower birth weights. One researcher decides to look at the age of the mother to determine if younger mothers have babies that are significantly heavier or lighter than average. To study this the researcher collects data from 87 babies who were born to mothers between the ages of 16 and 18. Only one baby was measured per mother. Twins and other multiple births were excluded. The average weight for these babies was 7.3 pounds with a standard deviation of .6 pounds.
Which of the following statements is relevant to the assumption of Normality?

a. the standard deviation for young mothers is not expected to be different than the standard deviation in the population
b. only one baby was measured per mother
c. weights of babies are normally distributed in the population
d. the study used a sample that is different than the comparison population and measured weight on a ratio scale

Answer:

a. the standard deviation for young mothers is not expected to be different than the standard deviation in the population

Step-by-step explanation:

The population mean = μ= 7.5

Sample mean = x`= 7.3

Sample standard deviation= s= 0.6

Sample size = 87

Assuming normality we perform z test

z= x`-u/s/√n

z= 7.3-7.5/0.6/√87

z= -3.11

The critical region for 0.05 for two tailed test is z>+1.96 and Z<-1.96

Since the calculated z= -3.11 falls in the critical region Z<-1.96 we conclude that birth rate is lower in the young mothers.

a. the standard deviation for young mothers is not expected to be different than the standard deviation in the population

Only choice a is correct because when n > 30 the population standard deviation and the sample standard deviation are assumed to be normal

Choice b cannot be the correct option because it is already inferred that only one baby was measured per mother.

Choice C cannot be also the best choice because it is already assumed.

Choice d is totally incorrect.

a vase has 6 flowers in it. there are 3 roses, 1/3 are peonies, and the rest are lilies. what fraction of the flowers are lilies
Rudik [331]
Hi there!

We can start off by taking out some key information from this problem.

- 6 flowers in the vase.
- 3 are roses. (3/6)
- 2 are peonies. (2/6)
- 1 is a Lily. (1/6)

By converting all of the flowers to have a common denominator we can clearly see that 1/6 of the flowers are lilies.

Identify the amount, base, and percent in the problem: What is 60% of 485?
IrinaK [193]

Hey there! I'm happy to help!

The percent in the problem is 60% (as it has a percent time).

The base is the number we start with, so it is 485.

The amount is the percent of the base. As a decimal, 60% is 0.6. So, we just multiply this by 485.

0.6×485=291

Therefore, the amount is 291.

AMOUNT: 291

BASE: 485

PERCENT: 60%

Have a wonderful day! :D

Algebraic expression for 8+6q+q
irina1246 [14]
All you can do to this expression is simplify.

You need to combine all "like terms." There are two q terms so you need to combine those. To combine "like terms", simply add their coefficients. 6q has a coefficient of 6 and q has a coefficient of 1. So:

6q + 1q = 7q

Therefore your end result is:

8 +7q

Solve 3 + 4x > -5 for x
Debora [2.8K]

you have the following inequality:

3 + 4x > -5

in order to solve for x, proceed as follow:

3 + 4x > -5 subtract 3 both sides

4x > - 5 - 3

4x > -8 divide by 4 both sides

x > -8/4

x > -2

Hence, the solution to the given inequality is x > -2
