During a lunar eclipse, the earth enters between the sun and the moon, thus preventing sunlight from reaching the moon. There are two types of lunar eclipses: A total lunar eclipse occurs when the moon and the sun are on opposite sides of the earth. When only part of the earth's shadow covers the moon, a partial lunar eclipse will occur. In some cases, it is called a blood moon, similar to the blood moon that occurs this month.
