After the abolition of slavery at the end of the Civil War and during the time of Reconstruction, Southern landowners rented portions of the farm field to former slaves in order to work and produce cash crops. The new system was called "sharecropping."Farmers in exchange had to give the landlord a big portion of the crops. That is why tenants had to be very careful and better at managing money than sharecroppers because they controlled more of their own planning and finances.
