Since the discriminant is positive, this means we have two distinct real solutions.

If a, b, and c are rational numbers, then a discriminant of D = 40 indicates the two solutions are not rational. We would need D to be a perfect square to get two rational solutions.

A first number plus twice a second number is 24. twice the first number plus the second totals 21. find the numbers.
Ulleksa [173]
We do like the following:
Set the first number is a and the second is b.
We have two equations: a+2xb=24, 2xa+b=21
And we have 2xa+4xb=48 or 2xa=48-4xb
So: 48-4xb+b=21 or -3xb=21-48=-27 and we got b=-27:(-3)=9 and a= 6
a=6 and b=9

Help guys with the question
Naya [18.7K]

Answer:

\sin\Big(\dfrac{\theta }{2}\Big) = \dfrac{2\sqrt 5}{5}

Step-by-step explanation:

\cos(2x) = \cos^2 x-\sin^2 x = 1-2\sin^2 x \\ \\ \cos(x) = 1-2\sin^2 (\frac{x}{2}) \\ \\ \Rightarrow \sin^2 (\frac{x}{2}) = \dfrac{1-\cos(x)}{2}\\ \\ \sin(\frac{x}{2}) = \pm \sqrt{\dfrac{1-\cos(x)}{2}},\quad x\in [\frac{3\pi }{2},\pi] \Rightarrow \frac{x}{2}\in [\frac{3\pi}{4},\frac{\pi}{2}]\\ \\ \Rightarrow \sin(\frac{x}{2}) > 0 \Rightarrow \sin(\frac{x}{2}) = \sqrt{\dfrac{1-(-\frac{3}{5})}{2}} \Rightarrow \sin(\frac{x}{2}) = \sqrt{\dfrac{8}{10}}=\dfrac{2\sqrt 2}{\sqrt{10}} = \\ \\ =\dfrac{2\sqrt 5}{5}
