A 35 g block of ice is cooled to −83 ◦C. It is added to 565 g of water in an 87 g copper calorimeter at a temperature of 22◦C. F

ind the final temperature. The specific heat of copper is 387 J/kg · ◦C and of ice is 2090 J/kg · ◦C . The latent heat of fusion of water is 3.33 × 105 J/kg and its specific heat is 4186 J/kg · ◦C . Answer in units of ◦C.

Answer:

Explanation:

Heat gained by ice in warming up to 0⁰C = .035 x 2090 x (83-0)= 6071.45 J

heat used up by ice to melt at 0⁰C = .035 x 3.33 x 10⁵ J = 11655 J

Heat used up in warming up water to t⁰C = .035 x 4186 x t = 146.51 t

heat released by warm water to cool from 22⁰C to t = .565 x 4186 x ( 22 - t )

=52032 -2365.1 t

heat released by copper calorimeter to cool from 22⁰C to t = .087 x 387 x ( 22 - t ) = 740.72 - 33.7 t

total heat released = 52032 -2365.1 t + 740.72 - 33.7 t

= 52772.72 - 2398.8 t

Heat lost = heat gained

52772.72 J- 2398.8 t = 6071.45 J + 11655 J + 146.51 t

2545.31 t = 35046.27

t = 13.8°C.

A frame hanging on a wall is held by two cables. The tension in each cable is 30 N, and the cables make an angle of 45° with the
Vesna [10]

Answer:

(D) 42.4N

Explanation:

Since the frame is at rest, the net force acting on it must be 0. There are three forces acting on it: the gravity and the opposing forces of the two cables.

Since the gravity is a vertical force, we are only interested in the vertical components of the remaining forces. The net force equation is

F_net = 0 = F_g -2 * F_y

The vertical force of one cable (using the information in the drawing) is:

F_y = 30N * sin 45 deg = 21.21N

Now the weight can be determined:

0 = F_g - 2 * F_y

F_g= 2 * F_y = 2 * 21.21N = 42.4N

The weight of the frame is about 42.4N.

15.6 grams of lead(II) nitrate is in a test tube. A 4.8-g sample of potassium iodide is an Erlenmeyer flask. The substance in th
miv72 [106K]

Answer:

Mass of combined products = 20.4 grams

Mass of combined product and Erlenmeyer flask = 136 grams

Explanation:

 By law of mass conservation, mass cannot be destroyed or created. So mass before reaction is mass after reaction.

 Mass of lead(II) nitrate = 15.6 grams

 Mass of potassium iodide = 4.8 grams

 Mass of the Erlenmeyer flask = 115.6 grams

 Mass of reactants = 15.6 + 4.8 = 20.4 grams

 So mass of products = 20.4 grams

 Mass of combined product and Erlenmeyer flask = 115.6 + 20.4 = 136 grams
