Persons A and B are at the beach, their eyes are 5 ft and 6 ft, respectively, above sea level. How many miles farther out is Per
Marysya12 [62]

Answer:

The radius of the earth is something like 4000 miles= about 20,000,000 feet. (Look up the exact radius of the earth to calculate the correct number yourself, I'm too lazy!)

The horizon is where you're looking at a tangent to the earth's surface. Since the tangent to a circle is perpendicular to the radius (if we assume the earth is a perfect sphere), we can set up a right angled triangle:

H...P

.

.

.

.

C

Where C is the centre of the earth, H is the horizon, and P is the person. CH = 20,000,000 feet. CP = 20,000,005 feet (in the case of the 5' person, that'd be me :) And there is a right angle at H.

So using Pythagoras' theorem, if d = PH, then:

d^2 = 20,000,005^2 - 20,000,000^2

=> d^2 = 200,000,025

=> d = 14142 feet (just under 3 miles)

For a 6' person:

d^2 = 20,000,006^2 - 20,000,000^2

=> d^2 = 240,000,036

=> d = 15491 feet

So the difference is 1349 feet or 0.256 miles

Repeat this exercise with the real radius of the earth (in feet) to get the correct answer, but it'll be pretty close to what I've given here

35. the set, s consists of 900,000,000 whole numbers, each being the same number of digits long. howmany digits long is a number
weeeeeb [17]

Answer:

 • 9 digit long

Let the number of digits be n and the number of elements in set be s.

When n = 1

 • The set contains 1-digit numbers, 1 through 9,
 • The set consists of 10 - 1 = 9 numbers.

When n = 2

 • The set contains 2-digit numbers, 10 through 99,
 • The set contains 100 - 10 = 90 numbers.

When n = 3

 • The set contains 3-digit numbers, 100 through 999,
 • The set contains 1000 - 100 = 900 numbers.

The pattern we see helps us determine the relationship between s and n as follows.

When set contains n-digit numbers, the set contains:

 • s = 10ⁿ - 10ⁿ⁻¹ = 10ⁿ⁻¹(10 - 1) = 9*10ⁿ⁻¹ elements

We have s known, substitute it into equation above and solve for n:

 • 900000000 = 9*10ⁿ¹
 • 100000000 = 10ⁿ⁻¹
 • 10⁸ = 10ⁿ⁻¹
 • n - 1 = 8
 • n = 9

The numbers in the set s are 9-digit long.

Find two positive numbers such that their product is 192 and their sum is a minimum without calculus
harkovskaia [24]

192 = 2^2*2*2*2*2*3

= 16 * 12

= 6 * 32

= 64 * 3

= 8 * 24

= 4 * 48

Looks like its 16 and 12
