Subtracting a negative number is the same as adding the positive of that number. For example, 5 – –4 is the same as 5 + 4.

Multiplying and dividing with negative numbers if the numbers have different signs, the answer is negative.

y = 9x - 5...slope is 9. A perpendicular line will have a negative reciprocal slope. All that means is " flip " the slope and change the sign. So the slope we need is -1/9.

slope(m) = -1/9
(5,-4)...x = 5 and y = -4
now we sub and solve for b, the y int
-4 = -1/9(5) + b
-4 = -5/9 + b
-4 + 5/9 = b
-36/9 + 5/9 = b
- 31/9 = b

so ur perpendicular line is : y = -1/9x - 31/9
