With the salient features of this patient comprising of heartburn, difficulty swallowing, and globus sensation (feeling of lump in throat); everything points out to the impression of gastroesophageal reflux disease or GERD. GERD is the backflow of highly acidic stomach acid to the esophagus. The epithelium of the esophagus is not adapted to these highly acidic environments therefore causing damage to the epithelium which is responsible for the symptoms.

Chronic GERD is a risk factor for columnar metaplasia of the esophageal epithelium or Barrett's esophagus; and developing Barrett's esophagus is a risk factor for developing esophageal adenocarcinoma.

Which cell organelle determines if an organism is an autotroph?
otez555 [7]
The correct answer is chloroplast. If an organism has chloroplasts then it will be an autotroph because it will be able to make its own food by the means of photosynthesis. This is common for plants but there are some bacteria that can photosynthesize as well. If you don't have them you have to feed on other organisms that have energy for you.

What can be interpreted about type 2 diabetes mellitus in monozygotic twins when it affects only one twin 70% of the time and af
Masja [62]

Answer:

The correct option is C. Non-genetic factors can influence expression.

Explanation:

Non- genetic factors can be described as factors other than genetic makeup. These factors include environmental factors and factors arising from the lifestyle of an organism.

Certain studies have shown that both the genetic as well as the non- genetic factors play a role in the development of certain characteristics.

In the above-mentioned scenario, both the monozygotic twins have diabetes but one of them is affected 70% of the time due to his lifestyle. The person might be consuming more sugars and alcohol.

Which of the following factors does not affect membrane permeability? View Available Hint(s) Which of the following factors does
Dima020 [189]

Answer:

The polarity of membrane phospholipids

Explanation:

The inner core of membranes is made of nonpolar tails of phospholipids which in turn makes the membranes impermeable for polar, large and charged substances since these substances cannot cross the non-polar inner core. The saturated hydrocarbon tails pack tightly and make membrane less permeable while cholesterol affects the membrane permeability by interacting with non-polar tails.

Higher temperatures make the membrane more fluid and more permeable while at lower temperatures, membranes are more rigid due to tight packing of hydrocarbon tails and less permeable. The polar heads of phospholipids make the inner and outer surface of the membrane. Therefore, the polarity of phospholipids does not affect the membrane permeability.
