A truck was acquired on July 1, 2010, at a cost of $162,000. The truck had a nine-year useful life and an estimated salvage valu

e of $18,000. The straight-line method of depreciation was used. On January 1, 2014, the truck was overhauled at a cost of $15,000, which extended the useful life of the truck for an additional two years beyond that originally estimated (salvage value is still estimated at $18,000). In computing depreciation for annual adjustment purposes, expense is calculated for each month the asset is owned. Instructions: Prepare the appropriate entries for January 1, 2014 and December 31, 2014.

DR Truck {Property, plant and equipment} $15,000

CR Cash $15,000

December 31st, 2014

DR Income Summary $13,733

CR Depreciation expense $13,733

Explanation:

Depreciation per year

$162,000 - $18,000

=$144,000

=$144,000 / 9 years

=$16,000/year

=$16,000 * 3.5 years

=$56,000

Net Book Value of Truck on January 1st 2014

=$162,000 - $56,000

=$106,000

The truck was overhauled for $15,000 {It is a capital expenditure because life is increased}

On January 1st 2014

DR Truck {Property, plant and equipment} $15,000

CR Cash $15,000

Net Book Value after repair

$106,000 + $15,000

=$121,000

Calculate depreciation for the next years

$121,000 - $18,000

=$103,000 / 7.5 years {9 years - 3.5 years + 2 years}

=$13,733 / year

On December 31st, 2014

DR Income Summary $13,733

CR Depreciation expense $13,733.

The lawyer should make a motion for summary judgment.

<h3><u>Explanation:</u></h3>

A motion for summary judgement can be considered as a request that is made to the court for ruling other party that it has no case since there were no facts on the case. When the party makes the motion, it claims that the jury must rule in the moving party's side or the case should not move before a jury.

A party can involve in filing a motion for summary judgment when the party feels that there are no facts in the case or problem. In the example given, there exists no evidence against the doctor and hence no jury can rule in favor of the plaintiff. Thus, the Doctor's lawyer should make a motion for summary judgment.

Charlie’s Furniture Store has been in business for several years. The firm's owners have described the store as a "high-price, h
wolverine [178]

Answer:

a. Calculate current sales and ROI for Charlie’s Furniture Store.

asset turnover formula = net sales / average assets

0.4 = net sales / $800,000

net sales = $320,000

ROI = net income / investment

net income = $320,000 x 34% = $108,800

ROI = $108,800 / $800,000 = 13.6%

b. Assuming that the new strategy would reduce margin to 20%, and assuming that average total assets would stay the same, calculate the sales that would be required to have the same ROI as Charlie’s currently earns.

net income = net sales x 20% (new margin)

net sales = $108,800 / 20% = $544,000

c. Suppose you presented the results of your analysis in parts a and b of this problem to Charlie, and he replied, "What are you telling me? If I reduce my prices as planned, then I have to practically double my sales volume to earn the same return?" Given the results of your analysis, what is the actual amount of increase in sales required?

sales increase = ($544,000 - $320,000) / $320,000 = 70% increase

d. Now suppose Charlie says, "You know, I'm not convinced that lowering prices is my only option in staying competitive. What if I were to increase my marketing effort? I'm thinking about kicking off a new advertising campaign after conducting more extensive market research to better identify who my target customer groups are." In general, explain to Charlie what the likely impact of a successful strategy of this nature would be on margin, turnover, and ROI.

An extensive market research and a "successful" marketing campaign are generally expensive. Even if the marketing campaign is really successful in increasing sales, costs would also increase. So the equation may or may not change, depending if the contribution margin of the additional units sold will be able to cover the expenses of a complex marketing campaign. If you spend $100 to earn $100 more, your situation hasn't changed at all. Which means that net income may or may not increase, therefore, the profit margin, ROI and asset turnover may not change.
