An artisan in colonial American times could specialize in a single job to perform it to the best of its capabilities. This allowed him and his family to make a decent living in the city. On the other hand, colonial farmers lived in the country, not in the cities.  They did not need to live in the cities because they were focused on growing the best kinds of crops to trade with other colonies and to export the crops to Europe.
