For a particular experiment at the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory, electrons are each accelerated to an energy of exactly

50 GeV. Note: You may assume that the rest mass of an electron is exactly 0.5 MeV/c^2 for this problem.
Required:
a. What is the velocity of each electron?
b.The accelerator is 3km long. At the velocity in (a), how much time, as measured by the moving electrons, does it take the electrons to travel the length of the accelerator.
c. How long does the accelerator look from the perspective of the electrons?

Answer:

a) 0.99999 e

b) 1*10^-5 s

c) 3*10^-2 m

Explanation:

Given data:

Electron energy : 50 GeV

assuming the rest mass of an electron = 0.5 MeV/c^2

A) Determine the velocity of each electron

velocity of each electron ( v ) ≈ 0.999 e

B) How much time does it take the electrons to travel the length of the accelerator given that the accelerator = 3km long

Lo = 3 * 10^3 m

T = (3 * 10^3 )/ (0.999 * 3 * 10^8)

   = 1 * 10 ^-5

C) How long does the accelerator look form the perspective of the electrons

L = Lo / r  = Lo \sqrt{1 - \frac{r^2}{v^2} }

hence L = 3 * 10^-2 m

A sample of shale contains 0.03% 238U by weight. Calculate the number of spontaneous fissions in one day in a 106 kg pile of the
kumpel [21]

Answer:

a)mass = 300kg

b) no of atoms = 1.81 x 10^26atoms.

c)Fission Activity = 207Bq

d) no of fissions = 1.79 × 107 d^-1

Explanation:

a)mass= (3×10-4)(10^6kg) = 300kg

b) no of atoms = (300kg) X (6.022×10^23/kg) = 1.81 x 10^26atoms.

c)Fission Activity = (0.69)(300kg) = 207Bq

d) no of fissions = (207)(86400) = 1.79 × 107 d^-1

Two people push on a boulder to try to move it. The mass of the boulder is 815 kg. One person pushes north with a force of 65 N.
ivanzaharov [21]

Answer:

0.095 m/s^2

Explanation:

As the 2 force directions are perpendicular (North vs West), we can calculate the magnitude of the net force using the following equation

F = \sqrt{65^2 + 42^2} = 77.4 N

Assuming negligible friction, from here we can calculate the acceleration in accordance to Newton's 2nd law of motion

a = F/m = 77.4 / 815 = 0.095 m/s^2

A displacement vector is 34.0 m in length and is directed 60.0° east of north. What are the components of this vector? Northward
PolarNik [594]

Answer:

A)  29.4 m 17.0 m; B) 2 m

Explanation:

If a vector is 34.0 m in length and is directed 60.0° east of north (which means 30.0° over the horizontal), then its coordinates will be:

Horizontal: (34.0 m)cos(30.0°)=29.4 m

Vertical: (34.0 m)sin(30.0°)=17 m

If one person walks 8.0 meters in a straight line and then walks 5.0 meters in another straight line, then the minimum displacement would be to go back over his tracks, displacing himself 8m-5m=3m, while the maximum displacement would be going straight ahead, displacing himself 8m+5m=13m. Any answer outside this interval is impossible (2m).
