The liquid and gaseous state of hydrogen are in thermal equilibrium at 20.3 K. Even though it is on the point of condensation, m

odel the gas as ideal and determine the most probable speed of the molecules (in m/s). What If? At what temperature (in K) would an atom of xenon in a canister of xenon gas have the same most probable speed as the hydrogen in thermal equilibrium at 20.3 K?

Answer:

a) the most probable speed of the molecules is 409.2 m/s

b) required temperature of xenon is 1322 K

Explanation:

Given the data in the question;

a)

Maximum probable speed of hydrogen molecule (H₂)

V_{H_2 = √( 2RT / M_{H_2 )

where R = 8.314 m³.Pa.K⁻¹.mol⁻¹ and given that T = 20.3 K

molar mass of H₂; M_{H_2 = 2.01588 g/mol

we substitute

V_{H_2 = √( (2 × 8.314 × 20.3 ) / 2.01588 × 10⁻³  )

V_{H_2 = √( 337.5484 / 2.01588 × 10⁻³  )

V_{H_2 = 409.2 m/s

Therefore, the most probable speed of the molecules is 409.2 m/s

b)

Temperature of xenon  = ?

Temperature of hydrogen = 20.3 K

we know that;

T = (Vxe² × Mxe) / 2R

molar mass of xenon; Mxe = 131.292 g/mol

so we substitute

T = ( (409.2)² × 131.292 × 10⁻³) / 2( 8.314  )

T = 21984.14167 / 16.628

T = 1322 K

Therefore, required temperature of xenon is 1322 K

The pulley system below uses a gasoline engine to raise a drill head up through a smooth drill pipe. The engine provides a const
polet [3.4K]

NB: The diagram of the pulley system is not shown but the information provided is sufficient to answer the question

Answer:

Power = 2702.56 W

Explanation:

Let the power consumed be P

Energy expended = E = mgh

height, h = 5 m

E = 80 * 9.8 * 5

E = 3920 J

Power = \frac{Energy}{time}

To calculate the time, t

From F = ma

F = 900 N

900 = 80 a

a = 900/80

a = 11.25 m/s²

From the equation of motion, s = ut + 0.5at^{2}

The drill head starts from rest, u = 0 m/s

5 = 0 * t + (0.5*11.25*t^{2} )\\5 = 5.625t^{2}\\t^{2} = 5/5.625\\t^{2} = 0.889\\t = 0.943 s

Power, P = E/t

P = 3920/0.0.943

P = 4157.79 W

But Efficiency, E = 0.65

P = 0.65 * 4157.79

Power = 2702.56 W

A 50-kg copper block initially at 140°c is dropped into an insulated tank that contains 90 l of water at 10°c. Determine the f
xxMikexx [17]

Answer:

T_f=24.71

Explanation:

From the question we are told that:

Mass of block m=50

Temperature of block T_b =140 \textdegree C

Volume of water V= 90L

Temperature of water T_w=10 \textdegree C

Density of water \rho=1000kg/m^3

Specific heat of water C_w=4.18KJ/kg-k

Specific heat of copper C_p=0.96KJ/kg-k

Generally the equation for equilibrium stage is mathematically given by

mC_p(T_b-T_f)=\rho*VV*c(T_f-T_w)

50*0.96(140-T_f)=1000*90*10^-3*c_w(T_f-10)

48(140-T_f)=376.2(T_f-10)

140-T_f=7.8375(T_f-10)

140-T_f=7.8375T_f-78.375

-8.8375T_f=-218.375

T_f=\frac{-218.375}{-8.8375}

T_f=\frac{-218.375}{-8.8375}

T_f=24.71
