If there were 10 strawberry cupcakes then chocolate would have the same number as 10= 1/2. Then 2/4 can be simplified to 1/2 meaning that Rick are 1/2 of 10 and 1/10 is just one out of the 10 strawberry cupcakes.

Iteru [2.4K]
Convert the two fractions into simpler fractions: 3 2/5 --> 17/5 and 4 1/5 --> 21/5. Notice the the denominators are identical, so we simply add the numerators: (17 + 21)/5 = 38/5 = 7 3/5.

There is an easier way to do this, this is just the most clear way of seeing everything.

givi [52]
Using the PSN method:

P = -9
S = 8
So N = 9,-1

Using 9 and -1 in the original equation gives:

k^2+9k-k-9=0
\\k(k+9)-1(k+9)=0
\\(k-1)(k+9)

\\\\k=1,-9
