Solving systems equations by elimination
pishuonlain [190]
I won't answer them all for you (don't want to cheat - need to learn something).
But for the first one given:

-2x-9y=-25
-4x-9y=-23

you set up either x or y (which ever one you want to eliminate) so that one of them cancels.
So this one is easy - you just have to multiply an entire row by negative (doesn't matter which one) - so that the y's will be + and -

Since they're both 9 and they're subracting NOW - you can eliminate the y value. Now add/subtract the x's. So it'd be -2 or 2 depending on how you eliminated y. Then add the number outside of the = sign. Now just solve for x. After that plug in whatever you got for x into both of the rows. Then find the y value.

Hopefully this wasn't confusing -- reply if it is and I will try to simplify. I can give you contact if you need help with the rest

Good luck!

A motorboat covers the distance from one pier to the other pier in 4 hours and the way back in 5 hours. What is the speed of the
aleksklad [387]
R = speed in still water
r + c = speed with current
r - c = speed against current

3.5(r + c) = 70
r + c = 20
c = 20 - r

4(r + c) = distance from pier to pier
5(r - c) = distance from pier to pier
4(r + c) = 5(r - c)
4(r + 20 - r) = 5(r - 20 + r)
80 = 10r - 100
180 = 10r
18 = r
The speed in still water is 18 km/hour

Need Help on math question

Nikitich [7]

Answer:

36 yards

Step-by-step explanation:

The triangle is a 3-4-5 right triangle with a scaling factor of 12. No complicated Pythagorean theorem has to be used in this case.

60/12 = 5

48/12 = 4

3 is the only base number remaining.

3(12) =36
