Invasive Species: One of the main causes of extinction and endangered species is the introduction of an exotic species. New exotic species are called invasive species. Invasive species can disrupt food chains, carry disease, prey on native species directly, and out-compete native species for limited resources, like food.

Extinction: If a population decreases too much in numbers, they disappear. Extinct species mean that the species has died out and no individuals left. An example of extinction: New Zealand was once home to a bird called the Giant Moa. Humans settled as their population increased the Moa population decreased. The species is now extinct.

Carbon is a p-block element. It is the 6th element on the periodic table and therefore it has 6 electrons.

The sub-level notation is given as:

                             1s²    2s²       2p²

            The s-sublevel can only accommodate two maximum electrons because it has one orbital. This is why both 1s and 2s contains just two electrons each. When both sub-levels are filled, we have just 2 remaining electrons to fill the p-sublevel.    

The p-sublevel contains 3 orbitals and can accommodate a maximum of 6 electrons. But we have just 2 electrons. According to Hund's rule of maximum mulitiplicity, electrons will go into degenerate orbitals singly before paring up. Therefore, the first two orbitals in p-sublevel will receive an electron each.  

 This is why the first model fits.

This is because there are stronger intermolecular forces holding the iodine molecules together. The stronger intermolecular forces arise from the fact that iodine is a much larger molecule, so it has much more electrons resulting in higher Van der Waal's forces. This is also visible in the fact that at room temperature, iodine is a solid while nitrogen is a gas.<span />
