Levy Inc. manufactures tractors for agricultural usage. Levy purchases the engines needed for its tractors from two sources: Joh

nson Engines and Watson Company. The Johnson engine has a price of $1,000. The Watson engine is $900 per unit. Levy produces and sells 22,000 tractors. Of the 22,000 engines needed for the tractors, 4,000 are purchased from Johnson Engines, and 18,000 are purchased from Watson Company. The production manager, Jamie Murray, prefers the Johnson engine. However, Jan Booth, purchasing manager, maintains that the price difference is too great to buy more than the 4,000 units currently purchased. Booth also wants to maintain a significant connection with the Johnson source just in case the less expensive source cannot supply the needed quantities. Jamie, however, is convinced that the quality of the Johnson engine is worth the price difference.
Frank Wallace, the controller, has decided to use activity costing to resolve the issue. The following activity cost and supplier data have been collected:
Activity Cost
Replacing enginesa $800,000
Expediting ordersb 1,000,000
Repairing enginesc 1,800,000
a. All units are tested after assembly, and some are rejected because of engine failure. The failed engines are removed and replaced, with the supplier replacing any failed engine. The replaced engine is retested before being sold. Engine failure often causes collateral damage, and other parts often need to be replaced.
b. Due to late or failed delivery of engines.
c. Repair work is for units under warranty and almost invariably is due to engine failure. Repair usually means replacing the engine. This cost plus labor, transportation, and other costs make warranty work very expensive.
Watson Johnson
Engines replaced by source 1,980 20
Late or failed shipments 198 2
Warranty repairs (by source) 2,440 60
Required:
1. Calculate the activity-based supplier cost per engine (acquisition cost plus supplier-related activity costs). (Round to the nearest cent.)
Watson $ per engine
Johnson $ per engine
Which of the two suppliers is the low-cost supplier?
Explain why this is a better measure of engine cost than the usual purchase costs assigned to the engines.
The engine costs less when the full supplier effects are considered. This is a better assessment of cost because it considers the costs that are caused by the supplier due to poor quality, poor reliability, and poor delivery performance.
2. Consider the supplier cost information obtained in Requirement 1. Suppose further that Johnson can only supply a total of 20,000 units. What actions would you advise Levy to undertake with its suppliers?
In the short run, buy 20,000 from and 2,000 from . In the long run, one possibility is to encourage to increase its quality and maintain purchases from both sources (lowers source risk by having two suppliers).

Answer:

Levy Inc.

Watson = $1,096.60 per engine

Johnson =  $1,015.30 per engine

Johnson is the low-cost supplier.

Explanation:

a) Data and Calculations:

                                           Johnson Engines   Watson Company   Total

Price of engine per unit             $1,000                   $900

Annual demand                           4,000                 18,000             22,000

Activity Cost

Replacing engines a $800,000

Expediting orders b  1,000,000

Repairing engines c 1,800,000

                                              Watson   Johnson   Total

Engines replaced by source   1,980     20           2,000

Late or failed shipments            198        2              200

Warranty repairs (by source) 2,440      60          2,500

Activity Cost Rate:

Replacing engines a $800,000/2,000 = $400

Expediting orders b  1,000,000/200 = $5,000

Repairing engines c 1,800,000/2,500 = $720

Activity-based Supplier Cost per Engine

Replacing engines a $400     $792,000 ($400*1,980)  $8,000 ($400*20)

Expediting orders b  $5,000    990,000 ($5,000*198)   10,000 ($5,000*2)

Repairing engines c $720      1,756,800 ($720*2,440)  43,200 ($720*60)

Total supplier-related costs $3,538,800                       $61,200

Total price                             16,200,000                   4,000,000

You are interested in investing in a five-year bond that pays a 6.6 percent coupon rate with interest to be received semiannuall
NikAS [45]

Answer:

Assuming a par value of $1,000, the most i would be willing to pay for this bond is $875.85

Explanation:

The price of a bond is equivalent to the present value of all the cash flows that are likely to accrue to an investor once the bond is bought. These cash-flows are the periodic coupon payments that are to be paid semi-annually and the par value of the bond that will be paid at the end of 5 years.

During the 5 years, there are 10 equal periodic coupon payments that will be made. Assuming a par value equal to $1,000, in each  year, the total coupon paid will be  1000*0.066 =$66. This annual payment will be split into two equal payments equal to \frac{66}{2}=33 . This stream of cash-flows is an ordinary annuity.

the required rate of return is to 9.8% per annum  which equates to 4.9% per semi annual period.

The  PV of the cash-flows = PV of the coupon payments + PV of the par value of the bond

=33*PV Annuity Factor for 10 periods at 4.9%+ $1,000* PV Interest factor with i=4.9% and n =10

= 33*\frac{[1-(1+0.049)^-^1^0]}{0.049}+ \frac{1,000}{(1+0.049)^1^0} =875.85

A company has shares in 3M Company stock that it originally bought for $100,000. On 3/31/2013, this investment was valued at $13
earnstyle [38]

Answer:

Company A

On the income statement, this transaction will show up as:

a. Loss on the sale of investments of $20,000

Explanation:

a) Data and Analysis:

Original cost of shares in 3M Company =          $100,000

Investment value on 3/31/2013 =                          130,000

Increase in investment value (Unrealized gain) = 30,000

Sales proceeds for the investment  =                   110,000

The unrealized gain of $30,000 is now reduced to a reduced gain of $10,000.  The net effect is a loss on the sale of the investments of $20,000 ($30,000 - $10,000).
