The difference between self-help groups and group therapy is that self-help groups are;

  • not led by a professional clinician.

Self-help groups are usually made up of members with similar problems who come together, usually in an anonymous forum to discuss and share their problems with each other. It is believed that by sharing their problems within themselves, they can get useful tips on how to cope and get solutions.

Alcoholics Anonymous was one such self-help group formed in the year 1935 to help addicts who had sought professional help with no solutions in sight to share their problems within the group. They differ from group therapy because of the absence of a professional clinician.
