There are 4 main phases

full moon- the moon opposite from the sun , revealing the moons dayside. rises around sunset and sets around sunrise. the moon will appear full for a couple of days

new moon-the moon is in the same part of the sky as the sun and rises and sets with the sun

first quarter- a quarter of the way tho right it’s monthly journey. half of its illuminated side. rises around noon and sets around midnight

last quarter- this is known as a third quarter moon which rises around midnight and sets around noon
