Citizens elect leaders who vote on the issues in a representative democracy, and citizens vote on the issues in a direct democracy.

Representative democracy has the word "representative", because people are chosen to "represent" the people, and to do what their voters want them to do.

Whereas, direct democracy is called "direct", because the citizens have direct opinion on issues
