The location was upriver from Chesapeake Bay, yet far enough away from the river that Spanish ships would find it difficult to attack. The town's location on a peninsula made it simple to defend by land. In honor of King James I, the group established a hamlet surrounded by fortified walls and christened it Jamestown.
