The factor that may have caused this competition is the scarcity of food.

What is natural selection?

Natural selection has to do with the idea that species that are better adapted to their habitat live longer and have the opportunity to reproduce and transfer these favorable traits.

The factor that may have caused this competition is the scarcity of food. The original ground-dwelling frogs have different genetic make up which allowed then to live in different conditions ultimately making it possible for them to adapt to various conditions.

Different species of frogs developed as they lived in different niches because the organisms had to develop traits that enable them to survive in new niches which were passed on to offspring ultimately leading to the emergence of new species.

According to an ideal free distribution, individual organisms would be expected to move into low-quality habitat when:
Irina18 [472]

The organism will move in low-quality habitat when the benefit provided by the this habitat is same as that provided by the high-quality habitat.

Ideal free distribution is a theoretical concept in which the organism distributes itself in the environment such that the competition is minimized between the species and the fitness is increased. The ideal free distribution is assumed to have the constant distribution of organisms in the habitat. According to this theory, the organism can roam freely in all habitats provided that the resources are abundant.
