Mitochondria contain circular strands of DNA similar to that found in many prokaryotes. Most important are those striking similarities between prokaryotes and mitochondria.

Each mitochondria is its own circular DNA genome like a bacteria's genome , but that is much smaller than mitochondria genome. Chloroplasts and mitochondria are similar in size to prokaryotic cells and their division by splitting /fission similar to prokaryotes.

Prokaryotes lack mitochondria ATP present on their cell membrane surface.Bacteria and mitochondria are also similar in the light of genetic elements -both contain circular DNA  and divide through fission. Mitrochondria have plump, jellybeans like shapes which is similar to rod shaped bacilli bacteria.
