Compared to C₃ plants, C₄ plants: (a) Can continue to fix CO₂ even at lower CO₂ concentrations and higher oxygen concentrations.

C₄ plants get their name from the first product formed from CO₂ fixation, which is a four-carbon compound (oxaloacetate).

In C₄ plants, unlike C₃ plants, an alternate mode of carbon fixation is observed which tends to minimize photorespiration.

The first step in a C₄ pathway involves addition of CO₂ to phosphoenolpyruvate (PEP) by an enzyme, PEP carboxylase (present in the mesophyll cells) resulting in the formation of oxaloacetate.

The enzyme PEP carboxylase continues to function even at lower CO₂ concentrations as well as during relatively higher oxygen concentrations.

bekas [8.4K]

The atmospheric pressure drops so the partial pressure of O2 drops proportionately. The hemoglobin must circulate faster to deliver the same quantity of oxygen to working muscles' mitochondria for cellular respiration. This increased basal circulation rate places a greater demand for oxygen to support it, which triggers in increase in red blood cell population so there is more hemoglobin to deliver O2. With more RBCs the circulation rate once more slows to the old basal rate.

1. False
Speciation is the formation of new species from a population of species. This process has three main stages: isolation, where the population is separated; adaptation, where the isolated population adapts to the new environment; and reproductive isolation, where the two populations can no longer breed to produce fertile offspring.

2. Behavioral isolation
This occurs when there is a difference in mating rituals or other behaviors which prevent interbreeding.

Predict the method that estrogen will initiate the reception process in its cell signaling pathway.
andrew-mc [135]

Answer:

d. Estrogen will bind to a receptor protein that enters the nucleus and activates specific genes.

Explanation:

Estrogens are small lipophilic molecules synthesized from cholesterol. This steroid hormone (estrogen) is able to directly enter into the cell nucleus to bind with their corresponding receptors. Subsequently, estrogen-receptor binding stimulates these receptors to form dimeric structures that bind to DNA and thus activate gene expression. Estrogen receptors interact with DNA and activate gene expression through zinc finger domains composed of four (4) cysteine residues surrounding a zinc atom.

Why are standards of mass necessary?
Alex_Xolod [135]
Hello!

Standards of mass are necessary because it is a whole lot easier than using a bunch of different systems. Since the metric system is common, it would be easier to compare something with someone from America and someone from Germany using the metric system as opposed to something otherwise.<span />
