The molar absorptivity is

Molar absorptivity is defined as the measure a compound's ability to absorb light of a specific wavelength. It is represented by the constant/symbol 'ε'.

The molar absorptivity is given by :

A = εcl

where A is the absorbance

ε is the molar absorptivity

c is the molar concentration of the compound

and l is the path length

here, the molar concentration of the solution is 0.16 mol

and the path length is 1 cm

to find the molar absorptivity , one must know the absorbance of the material.

The molar absorptivity of the solute is 5.375 mol L⁻¹ cm⁻¹

Molar Absorptivity

The capacity of a substance to absorb light of a certain wavelength is known as molar absorptivity. It is denoted by the symbol or constant "ε".

Now according to Beer-Lambert law,

"The concentration of a solution may be determined by measuring its absorbance since there is a linear relationship between the concentration and the absorbance of the solution."

A = εbC ......(i)

Where A ⇒ Absorbance

ε ⇒ Molar absorptivity

b ⇒ Length of the light path

c ⇒ Concentration

Now, from (i)

A = εbC

0.86 = ε × 1 × 0.16

0.86 = ε × 0.16

ε = \frac{0.86}{0.16} mol L⁻¹ cm⁻¹

ε = 5.375 mol L⁻¹ cm⁻¹

Therefore, the molar absorptivity of the solute is 5.375 mol L⁻¹ cm⁻¹

Chemical analysis shows that citric acid contains 37.51% C, 4.20% H, and 58.29% O. What is the empirical formula for citric acid
Fiesta28 [93]

The empirical formula for the citric acid is C₆H₈O₇

Data obtained from the question

 • Carbon (C) = 37.51%
 • Hydrogen (H) = 4.20%
 • Oxygen (O) = 58.29%
 • Empirical formula =?

Divide by their molar mass

C = 37.51 / 12 = 3.126

H = 4.2 / 1 = 4.2

O = 58.29 / 16 = 3.643

Divide by the smallest

C = 3.126 / 3.126 = 1

H = 4.2 / 3.126 = 1.34

O = 3.643 / 3.126 = 1.17

Multiply through by 6 to express in whole number

C = 1 × 6 = 6

H = 1.34 × 6 = 8

O = 1.17 × 6 = 7

Thus, the empirical formula for the citric acid is C₆H₈O₇
